WHO Campaign on Medical Devices

Greetings. We would like to share important information which have taken place over the last 3 months: On new publications:  Health technology assessment of medical devices;  Inventory and maintenance management information system for medical devices; and Availability, price and affordability of health technologies for the management of diabetes.

On World Health Assembly - WHA78: The approval of resolution WHA78.13 on medical imaging and the launch of the Global Diagnostics Taskforce.

Ongoing work, awaiting updates to be published in September, including those related to the 5th WHO Global Forum on Medical Devices, diagnostics definition.

 

New publications on medical devices:

WHO is pleased to announce that the second edition of the  HTA book of the medical devices series was published!

"Health technology assessment of medical devices, 2nd ed. "

Launched during the "Health technology assessment panel" in the 5th Global Forum on Medical devices on 3rd  June.

New publications on medical devices:

WHO is pleased to share the publication, which took 2 years in development and to thank all contributors, including main writers, WHO staff and STAG MEDEV members.

Inventory and maintenance management information system for medical devices

This publication was discussed during the "Health technology management" panel in the 5th Global Forum on Medical devices on 3rd  June, and published the following day!

World Health Assembly WHA78, 19 -27th May.

The agenda included the following topics related to medical devices.

13.1 On Non-communicable diseases (including resolutions WHA74.4 on diabetes and WHA73.2 on cervical cancer).

13.3 Universal health coverage, including EB156(17) on Strengthening Medical  imaging capacity, which was approved and became WHA78.13 

13.6 Report of WHA75.25 on Medical devices nomenclature, which was discussed by Member States, including the use of the nomenclature systems in MeDevIS

WHA Official side event, taking place in person, in the Palais des Nations:    On 21 May 27. 19:30- 20:50 Moving towards Action: Strengthening Diagnostics Capacity Through Global Collaboration.

 

On Diagnostics, 2 updates:

The Global Diagnostics Coalition, a WHO managed network to strengthen diagnostics capacity, which was launched in side events during WHA78,  now has a website, logo and application form. and invites academic institutions and non-state actors to join efforts.

The 76th World Health Assembly on 30 May 2023, approved the WHA76.5 resolution named “Strengthening diagnostics capacity.” The resolution included a footnote and requested WHO “to develop and/or update WHO definitions of diagnostics, through a group of experts and public consultations”.  Thanks for the 75 comments received! A definition has just been approved, last week, after long consultation process and will be disseminated briefly.

 

Strategic and technical Advisory group of experts for medical devices.

The call for new members has been closed. Thank you for your interest! we got 140 applicants and 14 new members for STAG MEDEV are in the final approval process, in order to increase  the areas of expertise of the members, to address the recent resolutions.

We hereby thank the current STAG MEDEV MEMBERS which provided extraordinary support during the 5th Global Forum, as well as the review of publications and review of MEDEVIS.

 

The 5th WHO Global Forum for Medical Devices, had 1795 participants.

The 5th Global Forum took place in WHO HQ in Geneva, Switzerland, from 2 to 4 June 2025 in a virtual format to allow global participation from 12:00 to 16:00 hrs. CET.

Thank you for your interest!!! A total of 1795 participants from 130 Member States joined the online sessions to  listen to 120 speakers in 15 panels and 5 side events.

The report is being drafted including the participants evaluations and suggestions. The 5th Global Forum material will be shared with you as soon as it becomes available.
